I said I was going to provide a somewhat more detailed account of the honeymoon (whether anyone else wants it or not), so here it is. I will probably just have a different post for each day. Each post also links to the set of pictures for each day. And the description and pictures should go roughly in the same order, so I dont have to refer to each picture (at least I hope not). Before I get to it, I want to let everyone know about the 'scrub caps' I was wearing while in mexico. Anyone who has met me knows that I have very little hair left on the top of my head (darned male pattern baldness). This means I worry about burning my scalp, which I have done on occasion. I used to wear a Tilley hat, that Sarah doesn't really like (even though she helped me pick it out), because she thinks it makes me look old (you be the judge). Anyhow, we were talking with some family friends, and it turns out one of our friends has a sister who makes scrub caps for the doctors at a hospital, and will make them for everyone and out of fabric with any pattern on it imaginable. I thought this would be much more stylish than my hat, and Sarah agreed, so we asked for some before we went to Mexico. I asked for one with Spiderman, Maple leaf pattern, and Batman, and left the other two to be a surprise. The other two turned out to have a camoflage pattern, and Spongebob Squarepants. As you will see looking through the pictures, I like them. I wore them the whole time we were in Mexico, saved my head from burning, and continue to wear them constantly, I think they are great. Thanks a bunch Sue!
So we left Digby on Sunday afternoon (I want to thank everyone for decorating the car, it looked wonderful), and drove back to Halifax. Thankfully we already had most of our stuff organized for Mexico, and it was just a matter of doing a bit of laundry, emptying the suitcases and filling them back up again. I think we made it to bed by 10pm, as we had a 4am taxi pickup to the airport Monday morning, so we could catch our first flight at 6am. We arrived in Mexico at 4pm local time, and then had a private car to the resort, as our flight was late getting in. A note when you arrive at Cancun airport, if you can say 'NO' to timeshare salesmen (or you want to go to a presentation), we found it was worth it to get some decent information about where we were going. As we tried to exit the airport, there were guys with tourism tags on offering information about Mexico. We got some good info about where to go and what to do in Playa del Carmen, but were surprised when he started mentioning presentations and food at another hotel. We figured out it was likely about timeshares, and not really wanting to listen to do that on our honeymoon, we just told the guy no. He was good about it too. But if you can't say no, then I would just keep walking right out the doors of the airport.
So we check in to the resort (Riu Playacar, really nice spot I must say) and get to our room, and we cant get over how big everything is. The main room is a really nice size, with 2 double beds pushed together, a large bathroom area with a nice big shower, seperate toilet, and closet with the safe. Oh yeah, did I mention the minibar and fridge, with something for everyone? It almost makes me wish every hotel was all inclusive. So then we decided while we were still awake to check out the resort a bit. The playacar has six buildings with rooms, and each one has 2 or 3 floors (never found out, we were on the 1st floor). As you can see, we were in the pink building. Each building isnt that huge, and they are all kinda spread out, so it is big and yet feels cozy all at the same time. The pool and beach weren't very far at all, and what a beautiful beach. I've never been to the caribean, so I know there are nicer beaches out there, but that was the nicest beach I've ever been on. And it was pretty sweet. The water was pretty decent too, although it was rough most of the time we were there.
And with that little bit of exploring, we decided to get some much needed sleep after traveling most of the day.
